Promotion of Traditional Indian Sports including National Level Wrestling Competition:

Haliyal is famous for traditional Wrestling competition. In order to promote this sport, Shri V.R. Deshpande Memorial Trust is regularly conducting National & State Level Wrestling Competition in Haliyal. Under U.K.I.R.D.P., Trust Conducted Wrestling Competition from 21-2-2015 to 23-2-2015. Competition concluded with Cash Prize with Gold Medal, Silver Medal, Bronze Medal as First, Second & Third prizes respectively. In all, Trust has spent Rs. 9,75,000/- as cash prize to the 101 winner.

 

Support for Culture - ‘Haliyal Habba’ and ‘Kaali Utsav’ in Haliyal and Dandeli:

To support culture and tradition, Trust is regularly organizing ‘Haliyal Habba’ and ‘Kaali Utsav’ in Haliyal and Dandeli respectively. Support for culture is an attempt to unite the people and provide a platform to showcase the hidden talent of the local artists. During this academic year (2014-15), ‘Haliyal Habba’ was organized on 11th and 12th January 2015 and ‘Kaali Utsav’ was organized from 21st to 23rd February 2015 followed by Alva’s ‘Nudisiri’ programme. 

There were competitions for all age groups including general public. Rangoli, Cyclothon, Mehandi Application, Kitchen Queen Competition, Drawing & coloring contest, Nursery rhyme recitation & Blood Donation etc were held on the occasion. There was Cattle show/ Dog show and exhibition were held. Rural Sports were organized for farming community. 

The stage programme of ‘Haliyal Habba’ was inaugurated by visually impaired and captain of visually impaired cricket team Shri Shekhar Naik. He was also honored for his extraordinary achievement.  The programme was concluded with various entertainment programmes.   

The stage programme of ‘Kaali Utsav’ was inaugurated by visually impaired and State Level Awardee and Teacher Shri Maruti Moger of Bhatkal. The programme was concluded with various entertainment programmes by local artists and ‘Musical Night’ by Bollywood Singer Ms. Shruti Patak. ‘Bhargavi Dance Team’ from Udupi also delivered excellent performance.
